How the Blades Work
Each blade pivots on its long edge. Turned flat and closed, the blades interlock and shed water into gutters hidden in the frame, which drain down through the posts. Tilted open, they let in light and air. Because you can adjust them through the day, a louvered roof handles Oklahoma’s mix of hot summers and sunny winter days better than a fixed roof.
Manual, Motorized or Smart
| Control | How it opens | Roof price (HomeGuide) |
|---|---|---|
| Manual | Hand crank | $45–$110 / sq ft |
| Motorized | Wall switch or remote | $55–$125 / sq ft |
| Motorized with sensors | Closes on its own when rain or wind is detected | $75–$175 / sq ft |
ESTIMATE A 12′ × 16′ (192 sq ft) manual roof works out to about $8,640–$21,120 at those rates, before footings, electrical or permits. Our arithmetic only. Local quotes vary by brand and size.
Things to Know Before You Buy
- Closed isn’t sealed. Most systems keep out normal rain, but wind-driven rain and snow can get past the blades. Ask what the manufacturer says.
- Motors need power. Plan the electrical run before the slab or footings are poured. A licensed electrician usually does it.
- Hail and wind. Ask whether the blades should be left open or closed in severe weather, and what the frame is rated for.
- Add-ons stack up. LED lights, heaters, side screens and sensors each add cost.
- Brand and dealer matter. Louvered roofs are sold through dealer networks. Warranty service comes from the local installer, so ask how long they’ve installed that system.
Louvered Roof vs. Solid Aluminum Cover
A solid aluminum cover costs much less and gives permanent shade. A louvered roof costs more but lets you choose sun or shade. If you mostly want the patio shaded and dry, a solid or insulated cover may be the better value. Compare both in the cost guide.
